  • Noggin is a secreted glycoprotein that functions as a potent antagonist of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), playing a pivotal role in embryonic development and tissue homeostasis by binding directly to BMPs with high affinity to prevent their interaction with cell surface receptors. Originally identified for its ability to induce neural tissue in Xenopus embryos, Noggin is essential for dorsal-ventral patterning, neural tube formation, somite segmentation, and joint morphogenesis, effectively acting as a crucial regulator that balances BMP signaling gradients during organogenesis. Beyond its developmental significance, Noggin continues to influence adult physiological processes, including neurogenesis and bone remodeling, and its dysregulation has been implicated in various pathological conditions such as heterotopic ossification, skeletal malformations, and certain cancers, making it a significant subject of study in both developmental biology and therapeutic research.
