A proliferation-inducing ligand (APRIL), officially designated CD256 and encoded by the TNFSF13 gene, is a type-II transmembrane protein of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily that is cleaved into a soluble cytokine; it binds the receptors BCMA and TACI on B cells, thereby driving B-cell maturation, plasma-cell survival in the bone marrow, and class-switch recombination, while also promoting tumor-cell proliferation in multiple myeloma and other B-cell malignancies, and is being pursued therapeutically via neutralizing antibodies or decoy receptors to curb autoimmunity and cancer .
