Mitofilin protein is an integral component of the mitochondrial inner membrane, playing a crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial structure and function. It is a highly conserved protein across various species and is involved in stabilizing the inner membrane architecture, particularly in the formation and maintenance of cristae, which are the invaginations of the inner membrane that increase the surface area for energy production through oxidative phosphorylation. Additionally, Mitofilin has been implicated in processes such as mitochondrial dynamics, including fusion and fission events, and it may also contribute to the regulation of mitochondrial respiration and overall cellular energy metabolism.
