When phosphorylated at Tyr690, Stat2 becomes activated and forms complexes with other proteins like Stat1 and IRF9, leading to the formation of the ISGF3 transcription factor complex. This complex then translocates to the nucleus and binds to specific DNA sequences, promoting the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that are essential for antiviral defense, immune regulation, and other cellular processes. The phosphorylation of Stat2 at Tyr690 is a critical step in ensuring the proper transmission of cytokine signals and the subsequent activation of downstream immune responses.
