The REDD1 protein (Regulated in Development and DNA Damage responses 1) is a crucial regulator in cellular stress response pathways. It is primarily involved in modulating the mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin) signaling pathway, which plays a central role in controlling cell growth, proliferation, and survival. Under conditions of stress such as hypoxia, DNA damage, or oxidative stress, REDD1 is upregulated and acts to inhibit mTOR activity. This inhibition helps to conserve cellular energy and resources by suppressing protein synthesis and promoting autophagy. Additionally, REDD1 has been implicated in various physiological processes including embryonic development, metabolic regulation, and immune response. Dysregulation of REDD1 has been associated with several diseases including cancer, where its role in tumor suppression or promotion can vary depending on the context.
