GPT, also known as alanine aminotransferase 1 (encoded by the human GPT gene), is a key metabolic enzyme located in the cytoplasm. Its core function is to catalyze the reversible transamination reaction between alanine and α-ketoglutarate, producing pyruvate and glutamate, thereby playing an important role in the intermediary metabolism of glucose and amino acids. Although GPT is expressed in various tissues including the liver, heart, muscle, adipose tissue, and kidneys, it is relatively abundant in hepatocytes. Consequently, when liver cells are damaged due to drug toxicity, infection, alcohol, or fatty liver disease, large amounts of GPT are released into the bloodstream. Therefore, serum GPT activity levels are widely used as a conventional biomarker for assessing liver injury.
