FbpC is a key component of the bacterial ABC transporter complex FbpABC, whose primary function is to actively transport ferric ions (Fe³⁺) from the bacterial periplasmic space into the cytoplasm using the energy generated by ATP hydrolysis, thereby providing the essential iron element for bacterial growth. As the "energy engine" of this transport system, FbpC is an inner membrane peripheral membrane protein that possesses an active site for ATP binding and hydrolysis. It works in coordination with the substrate-binding protein FbpA and the transmembrane channel protein FbpB within the complex: after FbpA delivers Fe³⁺ to FbpB, FbpC drives conformational changes through ATP hydrolysis, providing the energy for ion translocation across the cell membrane. This protein is widely present in various Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria and represents one of the important mechanisms by which bacteria acquire iron ions.
