Cobalamin-binding intrinsic factor (CBLIF) is a glycoprotein primarily secreted by gastric parietal cells in pigs, which plays a vital role in cobalamin (vitamin B12) absorption. It binds to dietary cobalamin with high specificity in the stomach, forming a stable complex. This CBLIF-cobalamin complex is resistant to intestinal degradation and is specifically recognized by cubilin receptors on the mucosal surface of the distal ileum, facilitating its active transport into enterocytes. Therefore, CBLIF is essential for the efficient uptake and systemic delivery of vitamin B12, a critical cofactor for DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation.
