FDX1, or ferredoxin 1, is an essential mitochondrial iron-sulfur protein that functions as a critical electron carrier in several fundamental biochemical pathways. Primarily located in the mitochondrial matrix, it shuttles electrons from NADPH via ferredoxin reductase to key enzymes involved in steroidogenesis, heme biosynthesis, and iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis. By facilitating these electron transfer reactions, FDX1 plays a central role in cellular metabolism, energy production, and the synthesis of vital biomolecules. Recent research has also highlighted its significant role in regulating copper-dependent cell death (cuproptosis), making it a protein of growing interest in cancer biology and therapeutic development.
