Interleukin-5 (IL-5) is a crucial cytokine primarily produced by type 2 helper T (Th2) cells and group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). Its principal biological function is to regulate the growth, differentiation, recruitment, and survival of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell central to immune responses against parasitic infections, particularly helminths. IL-5 also plays a significant role in allergic diseases, such as asthma and atopic dermatitis, by promoting eosinophilia and IgE production. Furthermore, it supports the maturation and antibody secretion of B cells. Due to its pivotal role in eosinophil-mediated inflammation, IL-5 and its receptor are major therapeutic targets for monoclonal antibody treatments in severe eosinophilic asthma and other hypereosinophilic syndromes.
