Surfactant Protein A1 (SFTPA1) is a critical component of pulmonary surfactant, primarily produced by alveolar type II cells in the lungs. It belongs to the collectin family and plays a vital role in innate immune defense. SFTPA1 binds to pathogens, facilitating their opsonization and clearance by alveolar macrophages. Beyond host defense, it is essential for maintaining surfactant homeostasis and regulating inflammatory responses in the alveoli. Genetic variations in the SFTPA1 gene are associated with susceptibility to various respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and respiratory distress syndrome.
