Oncostatin M-specific receptor subunit beta (OSMRβ) is a crucial signaling component for cytokines Oncostatin M (OSM) and interleukin-31 (IL-31). It does not function alone but forms complexes with other subunits: with glycoprotein 130 (gp130) for OSM signaling, and with the IL-31 receptor alpha for IL-31 signaling. This dual partnership allows OSMRβ to mediate a diverse range of biological processes, including inflammation, cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Its signaling is notably implicated in the pathogenesis of various cancers, promoting tumor growth and metastasis. Furthermore, through its role in the IL-31 receptor, OSMRβ is a primary driver of pruritus (itch) in inflammatory skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, making it a significant therapeutic target.
